Afghanistan has been making headlines for a few weeks now! After the takeover of the Taliban and the end of the US troop withdrawal, people around the world are looking for protection. There is a heated debate about this in the EU, namely- who will take them in and most importantly, how many? According to UNHCR data, from 2009 to 2019, Austria granted protection to a total of more than 130,000 people – that is 1.47% of the population. Only Sweden (with 2.46%) and Malta (with 1.98%) have accepted more refugees in Europe.
