The victims are not only human. The losses are not just material. The earth, the air and the environment are also affected. That is what I noticed during my various reports in Ukraine. In June 2023, everyone was able to make the same observation when they saw the shocking images of flooded villages, poisoned water and people fleeing their homes. By destroying the Kakhova dam, the Russian army had caused what Ukrainian officials called “the worst ecological disaster after Chernobyl”.
I travelled to Kharkiv, Zaporizhya and Kyiv to document the environmental destruction caused by the war, for ereb. I met farmers struggling to feed their animals, residents who could no longer pick vegetables from their gardens, mine-clearers clearing the ground and experts and politicians preparing for the terrible and lasting consequences of this invasion. It is their voices and a dramatic but less visible aspect of the conflict that I invite you to discover in our documentary: In Ukraine, environment has become another victim of the war.

Astrig is a freelance journalist working for ereb. In October, for the first episode of ‘Off the Trail’, a series of video reports produced in partnership with the independent European media network, Sphera Network, she followed two sisters whose lives were shattered by the war in Nagorno-Karabakh. This time, in Ukraine, Astrig wanted to shed light on a less mediatised aspect of the war. |
