Why softball annoys the right in Spain

Softball’s a really popular sport in Latin America, but not so many people in Spain know about it. It’s often called the ‘little brother of baseball’ and it brings communities together, provides healthy activities for all ages and is a form of cultural expression that’s become more and more popular in recent years.

Back in October 2025, the far-right party Vox called for a softball ground (used mostly by migrants or their descendants) in the Latina neighbourhood of Madrid to be closed down. This was after a campaign of smears that made it look like the ground was causing problems with local residents.

@elsaltodiario  had a chat with Néstor, a softball player from Venezuela, who talked about his experience with the sport, how it brings people together, and why right-wing parties don’t like it.
