Women’s invisible labour, explained

The amount of invisible work done by women can add up to as much as 200 hours per month, research shows. If they were paid even the minimum wage for this labor, their contribution to the global GDP would exceed 10 trillion dollars.

In Hungary alone, this value would amount to nearly 5 billion forints. From cleaning and other household chores to caring for children and elderly parents, millions of women worldwide carry out these responsibilities on top of their full-time jobs. In Hungary, the situation is made worse by the persistent gender pay gap: according to 2023 Eurostat data, women earn 17.8% less than men.

This means that every fifth workday goes unpaid. In the public sector, the gap is even larger — 19%. ‪@negynegynegy‬ is a Sphera Network member and this story is part of our “Women” series.
