Beneath the famous concrete slabs of Argenteuil — the northern Paris suburb where Nicolas Sarkozy once promised to “clean out the scum” — a boxing gym has spent the last decade quietly trying to improve, and sometimes save, the lives of its residents.
It’s called “Salle du Temps” (the Room of Time), and by now everyone in the area knows it. “We’ve saved lives,” says Toufik, the co-founder. Over the years, the gym has become more than a refuge: a place where kids — often tempted by the easy money of the drug trade or caught up in violent rivalries between neighboring districts — can have fun in a safe environment.
