Fight for Housing Between Climate Change and Inequality

In Recsk, a small village in northern Hungary, a mudslide occurred in mid-June 2023, when soil extracted from the local mine was washed down onto houses during a heavy thunderstorm. For a long time, it was believed that the victims would receive 500 million forints in government aid, based on a government decree signed by Viktor Orbán.

However, in March last year it turned out that, according to the government, the support had become unnecessary, and the people of Recsk did not receive a single forint.

This is a story about how beyond physical damage, poverty, neglect, and the absence of public support trap them in dangerous housing. A stark portrait of climate vulnerability and inequality—told by those who have no choice but to keep rebuilding.
