Conservative president wins in Poland. What does it mean for Europe?

In Poland, the results of the presidential elections are about to alter the political course of the country.

The new President, Karol Nawrocki, a conservative candidate backed by PiS, will have considerable power: he can veto laws passed by parliament, blocking reforms by the liberal government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The president will be decisive for the rule of law, social policy, security policy and the country’s international policy.

Poland will hold the rotating presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2025, so the outcome of the presidential election will also affect relations with the EU, especially in the light of the rule of law disputes, support for Ukraine and migration policy.
