Catastrophic floods in Europe

But catastrophic events like these have been happening before. According to European Environmental Agency between 1998 and 2009, Europe had over 213 major damaging floods, which have caused more than 1000 deaths, the displacement of about half a million people and at least €52 billion in insured economic losses. This is why since 2007 there is the EU Floods Directive, which assesses and manages flood risks.
